RCN Presents $287,000 Check to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund
Nonprofit Remains in Need of Contributions to Restore Haiti
HERNDON, VA, Mar 26, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX News Network) — RCN Corporation (NASDAQ: RCNI), a leading provider of all-digital television, high capacity data and voice services, contributed more than $287,000 to support the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund. The company held a check presentation at its headquarters on March 19 to highlight its commitment to the nonprofit and support those affected by the earthquake.
In response to news of the earthquake, RCN committed $282,000 in donated cable time to run American Red Cross (Red Cross) public service announcements across all its markets. To provide further support, RCN employees raised nearly $5,000 through raffles, "casual for a cause" jeans day, fruit sales and other fundraising activities as part of its Help for Haiti campaign. In addition, RCN customers were able to make online donations from rcn.com.
"I am proud of our employees' continued support of those in need," said RCN's President and CEO, Pete Aquino. "Together, we raised over $4,500 for the Red Cross. We saw many creative responses to this important call to action and plan to continue similar efforts throughout the year."
To date, the Red Cross raised over $354 million, handed out 99,000 tents, tarps and toolkits and supplied meals for more than one million people. The Red Cross is still meeting urgent needs including providing clean drinking water and vaccines as well as looking ahead towards future needs such as preparing Haiti for the hurricane season.
"We are grateful for RCN's caring spirit and generosity in response to this disaster," said Lynn Kocik Keefe, American Red Cross National Capital Region's executive director. "It will take many years for the people of Haiti to recover, and the Red Cross will work hard to restore their livelihood and support their needs."
