RCN Delivers 1,000 New Books to a Brooklyn School
Relative of First African-American Auto Manufacturer Donates Copies of His Book, "First Black Autos"
HERNDON, VA, Jan 20, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX News Network) — RCN Corporation (NASDAQ: RCNI), a leading provider of all-digital television, high capacity data and voice services, has partnered with Tuck's R.U.S.H. for Literacy campaign to donate more than 1,000 new books to a local school. RCN will use their Smart Cars and vans to deliver the books to Brooklyn Collegiate, 2021 Bergen Street, Brooklyn, NY, on Friday, January 22 at 2:45pm.
RCN-New York City, its employees, business partners and customers contributed towards the book donation which values $20,000. Customers who donated three new books were offered a $20 discount on RCN services for their contribution. The father of an RCN technician, Henry A. May, donated 200 copies of his book, "First Black Autos." The book tells the inspiring story of the Patterson family who became the first and only African-American auto manufacturer.
"We were amazed that every one of our customers who donated books declined to receive the discount," said Tony Ontiveros, RCN-New York City's vice president & general manager. "We are grateful for the generosity of our customers, Henry and our employees who helped us donate over 1,000 new books to local children in need."
"RCN's donation will likely inspire our students and help improve their interest in reading," said Brooklyn Collegiate Principal Amote Sias.
The donation is another example of RCN's support of literacy through partnering with New York Giant Justin Tuck's Tuck's R.U.S.H. for Literacy program. This is the second year that the company has teamed up with Tuck to encourage children to embrace reading.
Tuck added, "Books and information should be accessible to anyone and everyone. We're working to help make that happen."
